Chapter 4 - The Signature in the Hospital

Eleanor did not deny the badge. She laid it on the kitchen table at her cottage the next morning.
"This is mine," she said. "But the clinic kept me overnight. I could barely walk, much less change a camera setting."
Jada placed the moving order beside it. Eleanor adjusted her reading glasses. The old sculptor ran one finger beneath the digital signature.
"I authorized a roof inspection in March," she said. "Not a vacancy."
She opened the foundation's deed file. Twenty years earlier, she'd put the carriage barns into a protected charitable property trust. They could be rented to Hudson Colors, but not sold or repurposed without independent trustee approval and public notice.
"Martin told me those restrictions were old-fashioned," Eleanor said.
"You refused to change them?"
"Three times."
Theo arrived with coffee and bad news. A clip of Jada shoving cake into Claire's face had been posted online. The video started after Claire's shove. Commenters called Jada violent and demanded her firing.
"The complete footage exists," Jada said.
"Don't post it yourself," Eleanor warned. "Armand needs to preserve the original files and their timestamps. We don't fight one misleading edit with another careless release."
Min called as they spoke. Her team was owed forty-seven hundred dollars. Jada apologized directly and offered to help prepare a damage statement for the insurer.
"Don't promise me charity," Min said. "Promise accurate numbers. My assistants deserve their pay."
Jada agreed. Her own mistake had consequences, even if Claire had started the confrontation.
At noon a courier delivered a letter from the foundation board. It suspended Jada from directing the residency until a conduct review could be completed. Claire, the woman who had pushed her, was listed as interim public-relations lead.
Eleanor read the letter twice, then picked up her phone. "Who signed this?"
"Martin and two trustees," Jada said.

Eleanor's face went still. "One of those trustees died in February."
