Chapter 17 - The Viral Lie

By noon, the clip had millions of views.
Half the internet thought I was a waitress bullied by a wealthy adviser.
The other half thought I was a billionaire’s wife who had secretly engineered a woman’s firing over an old grudge.
Both versions were wrong.
My communications team wanted a statement immediately.
I said no until we knew who leaked the footage.
The restaurant’s original file had a watermark available only on internal exports.
Tasha traced the copy.
A supervisor had downloaded it for the police packet.
His account had been accessed from a device outside our network.
The device belonged to a former contractor.
Delaney again.
Even after being detained and released pending charges, he had scheduled posts and messages through an outside service.
He had built a dead-man switch for his reputation.
Ethan wanted to sue everyone.
I wanted breakfast.
So I ate eggs in the kitchen while reporters gathered outside.
Then I recorded one video.
No makeup team. No dramatic music. Just me at a prep table in a black T-shirt.
“My name is Maya Bennett. I own the restaurant in the video. Lauren Pierce and I went to high school together. She did pour wine on me intentionally. Her employment situation was decided by her firm after a separate compliance investigation. I did not hire her. I did not fire her. I will not publish private personnel evidence for entertainment.”
I paused.
“And if you’re looking for a simple hero and villain story, real life is usually more complicated.”
We posted it.
Then I went back to work.
An hour later, Lauren texted me.
THANK YOU FOR NOT LYING ABOUT ME.
I stared at the words.
Then another message arrived.
I KNOW WHO GAVE DELANEY THE PHOTO FROM HIGH SCHOOL.
I called her.
“Who?”
May you like
Lauren was crying.
“My mother.”
