Chapter 15 - Trust What Scares Her

I read Claire’s note alone first.
Then I read it again with Lily sitting beside me.
She could not understand every word, so I explained only the part that mattered.
“Your mom wanted me to listen when you were scared.”
Lily looked at me. “You listen now.”
Children can forgive with a simplicity adults do not deserve.
I hugged her so tightly she squeaked.
“I should have listened sooner.”
She patted my shoulder. “Okay.”
That nearly broke me.
Later, Detective Ellis called with an update. Victoria’s attorney wanted a meeting. Victoria claimed she would provide evidence against Peter and Harold in exchange for reduced charges and a financial settlement.
“She still thinks this is a negotiation,” I said.
“People who build their lives on leverage usually do.”
The meeting took place at the district attorney’s office.
Victoria walked in wearing navy blue, calm and polished.
“You look tired, Mark,” she said.
I almost laughed.
“No tea today?”
Her face tightened.
Her attorney leaned over. “Let’s keep this productive.”
Victoria offered account numbers, emails, and a recorded call with Peter. In return she wanted immunity on the financial charges, dismissal of the child-endangerment investigation, and ten million dollars.
“No,” I said.
Her eyes sharpened. “You’re making an emotional decision.”
“No. I’m making the first clear one I’ve made in a long time.”
She leaned forward.
“You think Lily will thank you when this becomes public? When every detail of her mother’s trust is dragged through court?”
“You don’t get to use my daughter as a threat anymore.”
Victoria smiled faintly.
“Then you should ask where the original co-trustee document came from.”
Charles frowned. “It was forged.”
“The signature was.”
She looked directly at me.
May you like
“But the template came from Claire’s own attorney files.”
And suddenly Charles was the one who went pale.
