Chapter 18 - The Hearing

Three weeks later, Victor walked into family court with two canes.

The courtroom went quiet.

He hated that.

He hated being watched for movement as if every step were a performance.

Leah had warned him recovery would be slow, incomplete, and unpredictable.

Victor did not care.

He had learned to celebrate inches.

The state wanted Eli, Nora, and Sam placed separately because no single foster family had space for all three.

Rebecca wanted Rosie with her, but she also wanted the siblings to remain part of Rosie’s life.

Victor wanted all of them safe.

The judge looked over her glasses.

“Mr. Hale, you are seventy-two years old, recovering from a serious medical crime, and you run a major corporation.”

“Not anymore.”

The courtroom murmured.

Victor had resigned as CEO that morning.

“I’m establishing an independent board and converting my voting control into a trust.”

The judge blinked.

“Why?”

Victor looked at Eli.

“Because I spent fifty years believing responsibility meant owning the room. I was wrong.”

He asked for temporary guardianship of Eli, Nora, and Sam, with Rebecca living in the guest wing during her transition so Rosie could remain with the only siblings she remembered.

The state attorney objected.

The judge asked Eli what he wanted.

Eli stood.

He looked very small in a borrowed navy jacket.

“I want nobody to disappear.”

The judge’s face softened.

“Anyone in particular?”

“All of us.”

Victor looked down.

The judge approved a six-month supervised guardianship plan.

Nora cried.

Sam whispered, “Does that mean we get breakfast tomorrow too?”

Victor laughed so suddenly the bailiff smiled.

Outside court, reporters crowded the steps.

One shouted, “Mr. Hale, did a baby really make you walk again?”

Victor stopped.

Rosie was in Rebecca’s arms.

Eli waited beside him.

Victor looked at the cameras.

“No.”

The reporters leaned closer.

Victor smiled.

“She made me question why I wasn’t.”

Then Leah called from the hospital.

She had one last result from Victor’s case.

Something nobody had expected.
