Chapter 10 - The Secret I Never Owed Her

I had been pregnant once before Lily.

For six weeks.

I lost the pregnancy before Ryan and I were married.

I had told him then.

He remembered.

Linda was counting on panic to erase that memory.

Ryan’s face shifted from confusion to anger.

“She knows about that?”

“I never told her.”

Neither had he.

Only my doctor, my sister, and Ryan knew.

Detective Harper immediately asked who had access to our medical paperwork.

The answer was obvious.

Linda had helped Ryan’s father manage insurance records. She still used the same family accountant and benefits administrator we did.

By morning, Harper had a subpoena moving.

By afternoon, we learned Linda had accessed an old shared insurance portal four times during my pregnancy.

“She was collecting information,” I said.

Ryan looked wrecked.

“She was collecting ammunition.”

He began making a list of every private thing Linda knew.

My miscarriage.

My therapy after it.

The sleep medication I stopped taking before we tried again.

The panic attack I had at my mother’s funeral three years earlier.

Normal grief, normal fear, normal human moments.

In Linda’s hands, they became a case file.

That evening, police found her car abandoned near a commuter rail station.

Inside were clothes, cash, and a folder labeled EMMA.

The folder contained printed medical records, screenshots, photographs, and a typed timeline.

Every page described me as unstable.

The last page was different.

It was titled INCIDENT PLAN.

Harper would not show us the whole thing.

She didn’t need to.

One line was enough.

RYAN ARRIVES 11:15. EMMA DISCOVERS LILY BEFORE THEN.

I read it twice.

“She knew when Ryan would come home.”

Harper nodded.

“She wanted you to find the baby.”

“Why?”

Harper’s face tightened.

“Because the plan wasn’t to make Lily disappear.”

May you like

She slid the page into an evidence sleeve.

“The plan was to make it look like you had done it.”
