Chapter 15 - RAYMOND'S PRICE

Raymond called again.
This time, he wanted protection.
"Margaret's cleaning up loose ends," he said. "Victor was supposed to disappear. So was I."
Ruiz arranged a controlled meeting at an abandoned diner outside the city.
Raymond arrived late, limping, with a backpack clutched to his chest.
He looked nothing like the criminal mastermind Ethan had imagined.
He looked scared.
Inside the backpack was a ledger.
Dates. Amounts. Initials.
C.H. — 25,000.
A.H. — 40,000.
The first payment corresponded to Charles's death.
The second to Ava's crash.
Ethan stared at the page until the letters blurred.
"You killed my father."
Raymond shook his head fast. "I damaged the brakes. Margaret said he'd discover it before he got far. She said she only wanted to scare him. Same story she gave me with Ava."
"And you believed her twice?"
Raymond had no answer worth hearing.
Ruiz did.
"You took the money twice."
Raymond's shoulders collapsed.
Then he revealed the part that finally tied Margaret directly to the scene.
After Ava's crash, Raymond panicked and retrieved the damaged vehicle before investigators could perform a full mechanical examination. Margaret used family connections to redirect the tow.
But Raymond kept the cut section of brake hose.
"Insurance," he said.
The same piece police found beneath the spare tire.
"Why leave it in the car?" Ethan asked.
"I moved it there last year. Margaret stopped paying me. I wanted leverage."
He handed Ruiz a small digital recorder.
"She called me after Ava woke up in the hospital."
The recording was twelve minutes long.
Margaret's voice was unmistakable.
At minute nine, Raymond said, "She could've died."
Margaret replied, "Then I would've had one less problem."
Ethan closed his eyes.
Ruiz turned off the recorder.
Before anyone spoke, gunfire cracked through the diner's front window.
Glass exploded across the empty booths.
Raymond dropped to the floor.

And outside, a dark sedan tore away from the parking lot.
