Chapter 15 - The Draft That Stayed Behind

The draft letter had never been mailed, but the clinic portal contained two shorter messages making the same false claim.
Investigators were working to determine who sent them and from which device.
Julian remembered the weeks when he thought Lena was growing withdrawn because she was tired.
What if she had believed he didn't want to spend money helping her?
That evening he sat beside her bed and said, "There's something I need you to hear."
Lena put down her pencil.
"Okay."
"I never decided you weren't worth more tests or more help. I should have asked better questions, but I never stopped wanting you to get care."
She looked at him for a long time.
"Meredith said you were tired of paying for me."
The words hit harder than any accusation from an adult.
"I'm sorry I left you alone with that lie," Julian said.
"You're not a bill. You're my daughter."
"Even when I'm sick?"
"Especially when you're scared. But I love you when you're happy, too. I want all of you, not just the parts that are easy."
She placed her hand over his.
Outside the room, Carmen waited with an update.
The revised nighttime support had improved Lena's comfort, but the team was still investigating her underlying muscle weakness.
"It's a process," Carmen said.
"There may be setbacks. Don't measure her recovery by a single good night."
Julian nodded.
His phone buzzed with an email from Rachel.
The investigator had obtained business messages between Owen and Meredith.
Owen had written, I can't keep billing for equipment nobody has.
Meredith's reply followed three minutes later.
Then stop asking questions and send the invoice. Julian approves anything marked urgent.

Julian read the last sentence twice.
It was proof of a scheme built not only on deception, but on knowing exactly how little attention he had paid.
