Chapter 16 - The Story They Wanted

By noon, strangers had decided I was a liar, a gold digger, a cold-blooded heiress.

Maya took my phone away.

"You're fighting evidence with evidence, not usernames," Maya said.

Dad's communications team prepared a statement. I deleted it.

"What do you want to say?" Dad asked.

"The truth. Without adjectives."

That afternoon, I sat in front of one camera with Detective Lewis's approval and Maya beside the lens.

I looked straight into the camera.

"My husband assaulted me. I did not consent. Medical records documented my injuries before any public statement was made. A recording captured him saying there were no cameras, no witnesses, and that he planned to accuse me of attacking another woman. Those materials are with law enforcement. I will not release graphic evidence for entertainment. I will testify under oath."

"My family's money does not make me more believable. His money does not make him less dangerous. Evidence decides this."

Maya stopped recording.

"That's the one."

The video spread fast. Not everyone believed me. I stopped needing everyone.

Then Selene did something none of us expected.

Through her attorney, Selene released a sworn statement.

She admitted the affair.

She admitted helping Julian hide expenses.

She admitted watching the assault.

And she wrote one sentence that made every major network call Maya within ten minutes:

I COUNTED THE FINAL TWO LASHES. ELENA DID NOT CONSENT. I AM ASHAMED OF WHAT I DID.

"Do I forgive her now?" I asked.

"No. Truth isn't a coupon for forgiveness," Maya said.

That evening, the Saint James subpoena return arrived.

Dad's eight-million-dollar payment was clean.

Richard's were not.

Six separate orders led to surveillance, intimidation, the caretaker's fatal crash, my brake sabotage, and the lake-house shooting.

Maya looked through the pages.

"This is enough to bury Richard."

Then she stopped.

"What?"

She turned one page toward me.

There was a seventh order.

Target: MAYA BROOKS.

May you like

Status: PENDING.

And the scheduled date was tomorrow.
