Chapter 7 - THE MISSING CHILD

Hannah stared at the photograph until her hands shook.

"Owen knew Caroline?"

Grant turned toward her.

"You tell me."

"He never said her name."

Owen Reed had worked as a security systems contractor before disappearing three years earlier.

Hannah believed he had run from debt, shame, or responsibility.

Now Caroline's photograph suggested another life.

Daniel enhanced the image.

They were standing beside Pier 17.

The date stamp was six days before the explosion.

In Owen's hand was a blue access card.

Grant knew the design.

Old Mercer port security.

Hannah covered her mouth.

"He told me he was doing a temporary job at the waterfront."

Grant asked, "Did he leave anything behind?"

"A storage key. I threw it in a drawer."

They drove back to Manhattan before sunrise.

The key opened a small locker in Queens.

Inside were three hard drives, a child's red mitten, and a sealed letter addressed to Hannah.

She opened it with trembling fingers.

Han,

If I disappear, it is because I saw a little girl survive something powerful men needed her not to survive.

Hannah stopped reading.

Grant's cane slipped against the concrete floor.

Daniel picked up the red mitten.

Grant remembered buying Emma a pair exactly like it before the winter she died.

Hannah continued.

The girl was alive when they moved her from Pier 17. Caroline was not. I copied the transfer footage. Malcolm's people found out.

Grant's voice broke.

"Play the drive."

The footage was grainy.

He could not see it.

Daniel narrated.

An ambulance.

Hale.

Malcolm.

A small child on a stretcher.

Red mitten on one hand.

Daniel stopped speaking.

Grant slammed his fist into the locker wall.

"Keep going."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"She's moving. Grant... Emma is moving."

Five years of grief collapsed into one impossible fact.

His daughter had left Pier 17 alive.

Then the video showed another man approaching the ambulance.

Owen Reed.

Malcolm's guard hit him from behind.

The footage cut.

Hannah whispered, "They didn't just hide Emma."

May you like

Grant finished the thought.

"They took your husband too."
