Chapter 2 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

The first clip lasted forty-three seconds.

It showed my living room at 2:14 a.m., eleven months earlier.

Amelia crossed the frame barefoot, carrying a glass of water. She looked tired. Pregnant-tired, even though Noah had already been born. The kind of exhaustion that comes from living on broken sleep.

Then another figure entered.

Vivienne.

I stopped breathing.

Back then, Vivienne was not my girlfriend. She was a consultant helping Mercer Foundation plan a hospital fundraiser. I had known she and Amelia were friendly, but I had never known she came to our house at night.

On the video, Amelia turned.

There was no sound, but their body language said enough.

Amelia pointed toward the door.

Vivienne stepped closer.

Then the clip ended.

“What the hell is this?” I whispered.

Tessa’s face had gone gray.

“I didn’t know that camera still had that footage.”

“You knew she was here?”

“Not that night.”

Vivienne backed toward the foyer.

Sirens grew louder outside.

I clicked the next clip.

Three weeks ago.

Vivienne stood over Noah’s crib while I was at work. He was crying. She leaned down, not to comfort him, but to whisper something into his face.

Then she pinched his arm.

Noah screamed.

I felt something inside me go cold.

The next clip showed her shaking his high chair.

Another showed her taking his stuffed bear and throwing it across the room every time he reached for it.

Another showed her holding a spoon near his mouth, then pulling it away until he cried.

Tessa covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

Vivienne rushed for the front door.

Two police officers entered before she reached it.

“Don’t move,” one ordered.

She turned toward me.

“You don’t understand what that child has cost me.”

I stared at her.

“What has my son cost you?”

She looked toward the camera.

Then she laughed once, bitter and frightened.

“Ask your dead wife.”

The officer took her arm.

Vivienne leaned close as they cuffed her.

“Amelia knew why Noah mattered.”

May you like

Then she whispered something that made Tessa grab the back of a chair.

“She just never told you who else knew.”
