Chapter 12 - A Face They Could Borrow

I studied the third photograph until my eyes burned.

The woman had my face but a pale scar across her forehead. Neither Iris nor Wren had one. I touched my own unmarked skin.

"Another sister?" I asked.

Wren shook her head. "No. One of the Miriam-line subjects. They altered her hair and dressed her to look like you. Rusk used her for security tests."

A cold feeling crawled up my back.

"So she can make anybody believe I was somewhere I wasn't."

"She can make them doubt where you were," Maya said. "That's not the same as proving it."

Sasha Reed arrived carrying a travel mug and a legal pad. She didn't ask whether I believed in clones. She asked where the original evidence had come from and who had handled it.

"Good," I said. "I work with records. I can answer that."

We wrote down every transfer: county file to my hands, tape to my coat, data card from Iris to Maya's computer. Maya saved verified copies in separate protected accounts and prepared a sealed packet for state investigators.

"We aren't putting women's medical records on the internet," Sasha said. "We go through people who can protect them."

Iris nodded. "Especially Noelle. She asked me once what the word outside meant."

A diner waitress came over and looked at all three of us, then at Maya.

"Honey, someone outside says she lost her sister. She showed me a picture of you."

Wren stood instantly.

Sasha motioned us toward the kitchen exit while she asked the waitress to call the police. Through the front window, a woman in a cream coat waited beneath the awning.

She had my mother's face.

A small bandage covered the scar on her forehead.

And in her hand was a folded note that read: PLEASE DON'T LET THEM TAKE ME BACK.
