Chapter 14 - My Mother's Last Bargain

I signed the first name that came into my head.

Not mine.

Marlene grabbed the page.

"You think this is funny?"

"I think you're stupid."

Gordon stepped closer.

The kitchen window exploded inward.

"POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON!"

Gordon turned.

I grabbed Sofia's car seat and threw myself to the floor.

Marlene screamed.

A shot went off.

Noah crashed through the side doorway with an officer behind him.

Gordon tried to run and was tackled against the stove.

Marlene reached for Sofia.

I kicked her hand away.

"Don't touch my child!"

She stared at me from the floor.

For the first time, she looked small.

Then an officer shouted from the basement.

"We found something!"

I followed Ross downstairs with Sofia in my arms.

Boxes labeled with company names.

Bank statements.

Property transfers.

Medical records.

And photographs.

Photographs.

Children.

Different ages.

Different families.

Noah picked one up.

"What is this?"

Gordon, bleeding from his lip, laughed from the stairs.

"Your mother wasn't the only one who knew how to move a child."

Ross opened a cabinet.

Adoption files.

Private hospital transfers.

Payments to nurses.

Birth certificates.

My sister's case had not been unique.

The Harper network had helped wealthy families hide unwanted pregnancies, illegal adoptions, paternity scandals, and medical incidents for decades.

I looked at her.

"You sold babies?"

Her eyes flashed.

"I helped families."

"You erased children."

"Don't be dramatic."

Sofia began to cry.

I held her tighter.

Ross pulled out one thin folder.

My name was on it.

CLAIRE HARPER.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Not the one I had grown up with.

A different one.

Different hospital.

Different father.

I stared at the line until the letters blurred.

Noah looked over my shoulder.

"Claire..."

My mother's silence became unbearable.

I raised the page.

"Who is Thomas Vale?"

Marlene closed her eyes.

May you like

Then she said the sentence that split my life open one more time.

"Your father."
