CHAPTER 10 — The Letter My Husband Hid From Me — The Truth He Never Wanted Our Daughter To Know

CHAPTER 10 — The Letter My Husband Hid From Me — The Truth He Never Wanted Our Daughter To Know

My heart stopped.

A hidden letter.

From Nolan.

The man who had spent fifty-eight days living behind my bedroom wall.

The man who had watched my life through hidden cameras.

The man who had planned to take my company.

The man who had tried to convince everyone I was unstable.

Now there was a letter.

A letter he never wanted me to find.

And somehow…

my eight-year-old daughter found it first.

“Detective…”

My voice shook.

“Where is Lacey?”

“She’s safe.”

I closed my eyes.

The air finally returned to my lungs.

“But Claire…”

His tone changed.

“She’s scared.”

I grabbed my keys.

“I’m coming home.”

The drive back felt endless.

Every red light.

Every slow car.

Every second away from my daughter felt unbearable.

Because for the first time in weeks…

this wasn’t about revenge.

It wasn’t about the company.

It wasn’t about Nolan losing everything.

It was about Lacey.

A little girl who had been forced to carry adult secrets.

A little girl who had watched her father disappear behind a wall.

A little girl who had been manipulated by the people she trusted most.

When I arrived home, I saw police cars outside.

My hands shook as I ran inside.

“Mom!”

Lacey came running toward me.

I dropped to my knees and hugged her tightly.

“Oh my baby…”

She held onto me.

“I didn’t touch anything.”

I pulled back.

“What happened?”

She looked toward the hallway.

“Someone was in my room.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Detective Miller approached.

“We arrived three minutes after the alarm triggered.”

“Did they take anything?”

He looked serious.

“No.”

“Then why break in?”

He glanced toward the stairs.

“Because they were looking for something.”

My eyes followed his.

“Something in my daughter’s room.”

The detective showed me the place.

Behind Lacey’s bookshelf.

Another hidden compartment.

Another secret.

I stared.

“How many secrets were inside this house?”

Detective Miller didn’t answer.

Because honestly…

he didn’t know.

Inside the compartment was a small envelope.

Pink.

Child-sized.

With handwriting I recognized immediately.

Nolan’s.

The front said:

For Lacey.

My heart tightened.

“Did he write this before everything happened?”

Detective Miller nodded.

“Based on the date…”

He looked at the envelope.

“Six years ago.”

The same year my father died.

The same year everything started.

I looked at Lacey.

“Sweetheart, did you read it?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became small.

“Daddy told me secrets were dangerous.”

My heart broke.

Because Nolan had taught my daughter fear.

I gently took the envelope.

“Let’s read it together.”

Inside was one page.

Only one.

But the words changed everything.

Lacey,

If Mommy ever finds this, it means I failed.

I stopped.

Failed?

I continued.

I wanted to tell the truth, but I was afraid.

My hands tightened.

Your father is not the man your mother thinks he is.

I looked at Lacey.

She stared at the letter.

Confused.

Because children should never have to read words like that about their parents.

The letter continued.

I made choices I cannot take back.

I listened to people who told me power mattered more than family.

I hurt people who trusted me.

My breathing became heavier.

Then came the sentence that shocked me.

But the person who pushed me the farthest was not my mother.

I froze.

Not Victoria?

Then who?

The next line answered.

It was Marcus Whitmore.

I looked at Detective Miller.

“The CEO?”

He nodded.

The letter continued.

Marcus promised me everything.

He told me Claire would never know the truth.

He told me your grandfather’s company would become ours.

My eyes burned.

But then…

the tone changed.

The next words were different.

They weren’t written by a greedy man.

They were written by someone afraid.

But when I saw what Marcus was willing to do, I realized I had made a terrible mistake.

I stopped.

“What did he mean?”

Detective Miller leaned closer.

“Keep going.”

I read.

Marcus did not just want control of the company.

He wanted Claire removed completely.

My heart pounded.

He said if Claire disappeared, everything would become easier.

The room became silent.

Then:

I should have protected my wife.

I should have protected my daughter.

Instead, I became part of the plan.

My eyes filled with tears.

Because buried beneath all the betrayal…

was the first honest thing Nolan had ever written.

A confession.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And my entire body went cold.

Lacey, if anything happens to me, do not trust Marcus.

He will try to destroy anyone who knows the truth.

Including you.

I looked up.

“What?”

Detective Miller’s expression changed.

“What?”

I pointed at the letter.

“He mentioned Lacey.”

The detective nodded slowly.

“That means Marcus knew about this letter.”

“And?”

“He tried to remove it before anyone found it.”

My stomach turned.

The break-in.

The hidden compartment.

The search.

It all made sense.

Someone was desperate.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Cold.

“Claire.”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Marcus Whitmore.

“What do you want?”

A small laugh.

“You found Nolan’s letter.”

My blood went cold.

“How?”

“You’re asking the wrong question.”

“What question should I ask?”

His voice became quieter.

“You should ask why Nolan wrote it.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Because he regretted what he did.”

“No.”

Marcus laughed.

“Because he knew I would find him.”

Silence.

“What does that mean?”

Then Marcus said the words that changed everything.

“Nolan didn’t disappear because he wanted to hide from you.”

My heart stopped.

“He disappeared because he was hiding from me.”

I couldn’t speak.

Marcus continued.

“And Claire…”

His voice became threatening.

“You still don’t know the biggest secret.”

“What secret?”

A pause.

Then:

“The reason your father trusted Nolan at all.”

I froze.

Because that was impossible.

My father trusted Nolan because he was family.

Right?

But Marcus’s next words destroyed that belief.

“Nolan wasn’t a stranger who betrayed your family.”

“He was someone your father once saved.”

I felt dizzy.

“What are you saying?”

Marcus whispered:

“Ask your husband who he really was before he met you.”

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Then I looked at the letter again.

Because suddenly…

I realized something terrifying.

Maybe Nolan wasn’t the beginning of the betrayal.

Maybe he was only another victim in someone else’s plan.

And the person who had been controlling everything from the shadows…

was still out there.

Watching.

May you like

Waiting.

TO BE CONTINUED…
