Chapter 17 - The Sound Behind the Door

The prosecutor's office did not make me listen to the entire recording. A child-interview specialist explained what it contained and asked whether I wanted to hear a short, relevant part before deciding how to participate in the case.

I said yes. Mom held my hand.

Dad's voice came through a speaker, younger but instantly familiar.

"Say you moved the money. Then I open the door."

Mom's voice was strained. "Ethan, she's scared."

A small girl cried in the background. "Mommy, please!"

I stood up so fast my chair scraped the floor.

"Turn it off."

The specialist stopped it immediately. Nobody asked me to be brave. Nobody told me it was only an old recording.

Outside, I sat on a curb and tried to breathe. I had spent seven years believing I was locked in that pantry because I had been bad. The recording proved something else: Dad had used me to frighten Mom.

"I hate him," I said.

"You can," Mom answered.

"And sometimes I remember him teaching me to ride a bike. I hate that too."

"You can remember that without making excuses for what he did."

For the first time, I let myself hold two memories at once.

Over the next months, prosecutors pursued the financial case using the transfers, witness statements, and original records. Ethan eventually admitted to diverting money from the relief fund as part of a plea agreement. Denise admitted her role as well. Their agreements did not erase the violence in our kitchen. That case continued separately.

The families whose benefits had been stolen received letters from the fund's administrators explaining that recovery efforts had begun. Some money was located. Not all of it.

June Alvarez called Mom after she got the news.

"I thought no one would ever listen," she said.

"Somebody finally did," Mom answered.

That evening, our attorney told me the prosecutor wanted to know whether I was willing to testify about the kitchen attack.

The decision was mine to discuss with my support team.

And I was terrified.
