Chapter 6 - Daniel's Office

The attorney's name was Rachel Kim.
Brenda recommended her before I finished the sentence.
"She handled my sister's tenant nightmare," Brenda said. "And Evelyn? Don't soften anything when you talk to her."
Rachel did not soften anything either.
"They established residency," she told me. "You need formal notice. We do this correctly. No changing exterior locks yet. No removing their essential property. Document everything."
"How long?"
"If they cooperate, weeks. If they fight, longer."
I hated the answer.
But I had spent eleven months choosing comfort over correctness.
I could survive a few more weeks doing things right.
That afternoon I locked Daniel's office for good.
At least I thought I did.
When I entered to collect financial records for Rachel, one of Daniel's file drawers stood slightly open.
I knew I had closed it.
Inside were retirement statements, the deed, insurance records, and an old blue folder labeled BENNETT FAMILY TRUST.
The folder was there.
The papers inside were not.
My pulse jumped.
I searched the drawer twice.
Nothing.
Then I remembered Sloan walking out of the office three months earlier.
She had claimed she was looking for printer paper.
At the time, I had believed her.
Now I called Harrison.
He answered from upstairs.
"What?"
"Come to the office."
Two minutes later, he stood in the doorway.
"Where are the trust papers?"
His expression went blank.
Too blank.
"What trust papers?"
"Don't."
"Mom, I honestly don't know."
I believed him for exactly three seconds.
Then his eyes moved toward the bookshelf.
I followed them.
Behind Daniel's old tax binders was a white envelope.
Inside were photocopies of the trust documents.
Across the top, in Sloan's handwriting, were four words.
HOUSE TRANSFERS TO HARRISON?
Below that was the name of a law firm I had never heard of.
Rachel answered my call immediately.
I read her the name.
She went quiet.
"Evelyn," she said, "I know that firm."
May you like
"Is that bad?"
"It means your daughter-in-law has already spoken to an estate lawyer."
