Chapter 11 - The Toolbox in the Suite

The toolbox sat on the hotel desk.

Dad identified it immediately.

The patent notebook was inside.

So were gloves.

A small pry bar.

He talked quickly.

Very quickly.

George hired him.

Vivian coordinated access.

A hotel security contractor did.

That contractor had once worked for Martinez Urban.

Now the conspiracy had layers.

George demanded counsel.

Vivian blamed George.

George blamed Cross.

Cross blamed money.

Dad blamed no one out loud.

He just watched.

I asked him later:

“How are you this calm?”

“I am not calm.”

“You look calm.”

“I learned years ago that the angriest man in the room usually gives away the most information.”

I laughed despite myself.

“That sounds like Mom.”

“It was.”

Of course.

The police asked Dad whether he wanted to pursue charges.

He said:

“That is not my decision.”

“Victim cooperation matters.”

“I will cooperate fully.”

No revenge speech.

No threats.

Just evidence.

That embarrassed George more than anything.

Then Easton’s board convened.

Lakeview was postponed.

Not awarded elsewhere.

Postponed pending breach review.

George’s lenders panicked.

His stock partners panicked.

News leaked.

MARTINEZ URBAN LINKED TO CORPORATE DATA BREACH AT WEDDING.

Fiona sat in a service hallway.

Still wearing part of her wedding makeup.

I brought her water.

She looked at me.

“Why are you being nice?”

“Because I’m not your mother.”

She winced.

Too sharp.

I sighed.

“Sorry.”

“No. I earned some of it.”

“No one earns cruelty.”

That was Dad talking through me.

Then Rebecca called.

“Blake, we found something else.”

The bid-data breach had not started the night before the wedding.

Someone had been accessing Easton systems for four months.

Not Martinez.

Dad looked at the name.

His expression changed.

“Who?” I asked.

May you like

He turned the tablet.

My name was on the account.
