Chapter 10 - JASON TALKS
Jason asked to speak to Sarah alone.
Jason sat across from her in a small interview room, wrists cuffed to a metal ring on the table.
“Was Paul involved in Rebecca’s death?” Sarah asked.
“Who told you about Rebecca?”
“Answer me.”
“No.”
“No, he wasn’t involved?”
“No, I’m not answering that.”
Sarah stood to leave.
“Wait,” Jason said. “Paul didn’t know what Mom was doing at first.”
“At first.”
“She told him Rebecca was cheating. Told him she was moving money. Told him she wanted to take Emma and disappear.”
“The same things you told people about me.”
Sarah felt something hot rise into her chest.
“You copied it.”
“Mom did.”
“You let her.”
“Yes.”
The word landed harder than Sarah expected.
“Why?”
Jason’s eyes filled, but Sarah felt no sympathy yet.
“My company was done. I owed people money. Not banks. People who don’t sue.”
“So you sold me.”
“I thought I could borrow against the house, fix the company, put everything back before you knew.”
“You filed for custody.”
“Mom said we needed leverage.”
“You planted drugs in my purse.”
“I didn’t know about that until today.”
“You packed my clothes.”
“I packed some of them.”
“You wrote the goodbye note?”
“Look at me.”
“You were going to tell Miles his mother left him.”
“What happened to Rebecca?”
“Mom followed her the night she died.”
“Why?”
“Rebecca had proof.”
“Of what?”
“Ray had been doing fake deed transfers for years. Mom brought him clients. People in debt. Divorces. Old relatives. Anybody with property and weak paperwork.”
“Property theft.”
“Rebecca found a ledger.”
“Where is it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who does?”
Jason whispered, “Paul.”
“You said he left.”
“He didn’t leave.”
“Where is he?”
“Mom put him somewhere he couldn’t talk.”
Before Sarah could ask another question, Harris’s radio crackled.
“We’ve got an incident at the Mitchell residence.”
Harris stood.
“What kind?”
“Fire.”
Sarah’s blood went cold.

Then the deputy added:
“Garage is fully involved.”
