Chapter 11 - The Man at My Gate

Security found him before sunrise.
A man in a utility vest parked two blocks away.
He claimed he was checking water meters.
Paradise Valley police checked his truck.
Customer:
G. Morgan.
Gwendolyn.
The police report changed everything.
Dad sat in my living room looking ten years older.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“About the fake Nevada LLC?”
“No.”
“About Mom’s name being used?”
“No.”
“The forged deed?”
He looked away.
“Not at first.”
“At first?”
He rubbed his face.
“Gwen said Chloe signed something as a joke. Later I realized what it was.”
“And you did nothing.”
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
“Losing the marriage.”
I stared at him.
“So you risked losing me.”
His eyes filled.
“I thought you’d always be okay.”
That was the most honest thing he had said.
I was competent.
Independent.
Financially secure.
So everyone decided I could absorb the damage.
“No,” I said.
He looked up.
“I’m not the family shock absorber anymore.”
Then he handed Maya the black ledger.
The entries matched bank records.
Forgery payments.
Loans.
Cash to ELM Consulting.
Private investigator fees.
And something labeled S.M. MEDICAL.
$4,200 a month.
For eighteen months.
Dad frowned.
“That’s not me.”
I searched the name.
S.M.
Samuel Morgan?
No.
The account belonged to a care facility in Tucson.
Resident:
Marjorie Price.
Gwendolyn’s mother.
Chloe stared at the screen.
“Grandma Marjorie died when I was twelve.”
That was what Gwendolyn had told everyone.
The facility confirmed Marjorie Price was alive.
And asking to speak to Paige Morgan.
Me.
I had never met her.
When I called, an eighty-one-year-old woman answered.
May you like
Her first words were:
“Your mother tried to warn me about Gwendolyn before she died.”
