Chapter 14 - The Red Cabinet

I didn't go near the warehouse. I called Tessa, who called Officer Chen and the city auditor. Investigators sought the records through formal demands, and a search warrant followed after the bank and grant evidence converged.

For three days, I tried to work. I repaired a century-old window latch for a woman who insisted on paying me in cash and homemade lemon bars. I almost laughed at the normality of it.

Then Officer Chen asked whether I could identify some records recovered from the warehouse.

In the interview room, she showed me photographs, not the originals. Inside the red cabinet they'd found grant invoices, business account ledgers, and a binder labeled FAMILY RESPONSE.

The binder contained a typed timeline for the kitchen confrontation. It instructed Ryan to record me pushing Diane and to begin filming only after the first blow. There was a line for the date and one for my expected reaction.

I read it twice.

"They wrote down how they wanted me to behave," I said.

"They planned to make you look dangerous," Chen replied.

A second document explained the forged loan. Ashbrook's file had been assembled with copies of my deed, a scanned signature from an old business contract, and the stolen notary credentials.

Ryan's approval appeared beside the document checklist.

"Is that enough?" I asked.

"It's a major piece," Chen said. "The prosecutor decides what charges fit, and we still have to verify who created each file."

She slid one more photograph across the table. It showed a plain white envelope from the warehouse safe, addressed to me.
