Chapter 2 - The People at the Door

"Who is early?" I asked.

Nobody answered fast enough.

A man in a dark coat stepped from the SUV and photographed our porch. Someone waited behind the wheel.

Daniel moved toward the hall. Robert blocked him.

"You invited an investor to inspect her house on Christmas?" Robert asked.

Teresa lifted her chin. "We're sorting out family business."

"With my property?" I said.

She opened her mouth, but my hand began to shake so hard I had to hold it against my coat. Robert saw and took me straight to the kitchen sink, where I held it under cool running water while he called for medical help.

The doorbell rang twice. Natalie slipped out of the room to answer it. I heard a man say, "We're confirming vacant possession for Monday."

Vacant. As though I were a couch they intended to remove.

Robert guided me toward the side door. "Your keys, Emily. You need a doctor."

"I need to know what Daniel signed."

"You will. First we get you treated."

Daniel caught us by the mudroom. "Baby, this is getting out of hand. You're upset."

"Don't call me baby."

"Nobody stole anything. We took a short-term loan. We were going to replace it after the sale."

"You can't replace my house with a promise."

He glanced at Robert. "Tell her why you gave it to her in the first place."

Robert looked suddenly tired. Two years earlier, when his business debts threatened the house, I'd paid overdue taxes and a contractor's bill from money meant for graduate school. Robert had insisted on transferring the title to me with a recorded deed. Daniel had known and had called it temporary.

"I gave it to Emily because she saved it," Robert said. "No conditions."

At urgent care, a nurse photographed the swollen cheek and dressed the scalded hand. The doctor said the burn needed follow-up and that I should not return to an unsafe situation.

As he spoke, my phone lit up.

A message from an unknown number read: YOU LEFT BEFORE SIGNING THE VACANCY STATEMENT. THEY HAVE A BACKUP.
