Chapter 17 - The Word Accepted

"The trustees have authorized a new Horizon Fellows award for you," Dr. Rowan said.

For a moment, the words meant nothing.

Then they meant everything.

"A new award?"

"The student who accepted the available scholarship keeps theirs. You haven't taken anything from them."

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

Leah continued, "Northvale is correcting your enrollment record and reversing the unauthorized withdrawal. You'll receive a secure acceptance link after identity verification."

"Housing?"

"We're arranging a room. It may not be in your first-choice building."

I wanted to ask ten more questions.

Instead, I started crying in Ms. Patel's office.

She crossed the room and hugged me.

"You're going," she whispered.

That evening, Renee made spaghetti, the kind with too much garlic, because she said celebrations should leave evidence.

Lila and Jo came over for dinner.

"Did you win?" Jo asked.

"I got my scholarship back."

Lila threw both arms around me.

Then she stepped away.

"Does that mean you leave for real now?"

"Yes."

She looked sad, and I let her be sad.

I didn't tell her to be brave for me.

After dessert, I called Mom.

"The award was restored," I said.

"I heard."

"Thank you for telling the truth."

"I should've done it the first time."

There was nothing easy to say after that.

I told her the girls could visit me with Renee before move-in.

Mom said she would think about it.

Later, a lender investigator emailed to say the guarantor dispute had advanced to formal review and I would not be expected to resolve it by paying a bill while they examined the evidence.

It wasn't a clean credit report yet.

It was a beginning.

Just as I was putting my phone down, Renee came into the room carrying an envelope.

"Your mother left this on the porch," she said.

Inside was a single key and a note: The rest of your life is in my locked desk.
