Chapter 17 - The Truth Had Witnesses

The hearing wasn't a grand courtroom showdown.
It was a small room where adults answered questions while Emma stayed safely away from the conflict.
Maya submitted the preserved video, the school inquiry, the auction records, and the messages threatening Zoe.
Clara attended with her own attorney.
Judith sat behind her, no longer in charge of the conversation.
Andrew described the shower and then described his slap.
He did not say Clara deserved it.
He said he'd reacted violently, recognized the harm, and begun counseling.
His admission mattered, even though it did not excuse what happened to his daughter.
Clara acknowledged holding Emma against the cake.
She confirmed that Judith had steadied the platter.
When asked whether Emma had attacked her, she shook her head.
"No," Clara said.
"She didn't attack me. She was trying to get away."
Judith leaned forward.
"Clara, think about what you're saying."
"I am thinking," Clara answered.
"For the first time in a long time."
Zoe's notes matched the video.
Beth's account matched Zoe's.
The school records established that an application had been submitted without verified consent from Andrew, though the question of who entered the signature required separate review.
The court made temporary safety and contact arrangements while the child-protection assessment continued.
Emma would remain with Andrew in a separate residence, and Clara would have no direct contact with her under the interim plan.
Communication about the unborn baby would use appropriate channels.
Outside, Judith hissed at Clara, "You've ruined everything I've done for you."
Clara looked at her mother for a long time.
"No," she said quietly.
"You helped me ruin things. I made my own choices."
She walked away without waiting for permission.
That evening Zoe called Andrew.

"A reporter contacted me," she said.
"Judith says she has a whole new version of the story."
