Chapter 4 - The Visitor

"Nobody gets her information except me and her care team," I said.
The officer nodded. "That's why I'm asking first."
The man waiting at the front desk was Vanessa's attorney, a fellow named Paul Dreyer. He wore a navy tie and held an envelope as if this were a business meeting.
"Rachel, the family wants to resolve this calmly," he began.
"You came to the children's hospital to talk about my sister's reputation?"
"Vanessa is extremely upset. A serious misunderstanding could hurt two children."
"One child is in a hospital bed. The other should be with an adult who makes her feel safe."
He placed the envelope on the counter. Inside was a typed statement saying Emma had pulled the skillet off the stove while I was distracted. There was a line for my signature.
I stared at it. "I wasn't even in the kitchen."
"That's what Vanessa recalls."
"Vanessa told the police I was downstairs. Which is it?"
His jaw tightened. "I'm simply offering an opportunity to avoid unnecessary conflict."
I handed the paper back. "Then stop offering lies."
Brooks met me in the hallway afterward. I told her about the statement. She asked me to describe it, then went to speak with hospital security about the visit.
At lunchtime, my mother's younger sister Tess arrived with a clean change of clothes and two stuffed animals. She took one look at me and set everything down.
"I know you don't want advice," she said. "So here's an offer. You and Emma can stay with me for as long as you need."
"Mom will make you choose sides."
"She started doing that when we were kids. I'm fifty-six now. I'm done."
Tess sat beside me and unwrapped a sandwich. "Eat half. Emma needs you standing up."
I ate because arguing took more strength than chewing.
As Tess opened her phone to show me the spare room, a family group message appeared. Mom had written, EMMA PULLED A HOT PAN DOWN. RACHEL IS GRIEVING AND CONFUSED. PLEASE DON'T SPREAD RUMORS.
Below it was a photograph of Lily and Emma at the breakfast table taken earlier that morning.

I zoomed in. Lily wasn't guarding her chair.
She was smiling, making room for Emma beside her.
