Chapter 8 - THE WEDDING THAT WAS REALLY A DEAL

Grant read the message twice.

“What archive?”

Dad answered slowly. “The Mercer records building on Ashford Street.”

Marcus called it in.

While he spoke with police, Grant turned toward Juliette. His face had changed. He no longer looked like a groom whose wedding had been interrupted. He looked like a man reviewing a contract he had signed without reading the last page.

“Why today?” he asked.

Juliette frowned. “What?”

“Why were you so determined to marry me today?”

Her face tightened.

I looked at them.

Grant pulled a folded packet from the inside pocket of his tuxedo jacket. “My family office was supposed to close a two-hundred-million-dollar investment into Mercer Urban on Monday. The agreement activates after our marriage because the Hale trust requires a family connection.”

Dad whispered, “Juliette.”

She stood. “The company needs that money.”

Grant’s voice sharpened. “Did Victor know Caroline might be alive?”

Silence.

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

The word landed hard.

Juliette gripped the back of a chair. “He found out six months ago that Marcus had located her. He said if Caroline appeared before the Hale investment closed, lenders would reopen the estate transfer and freeze our credit.”

“So the wedding was not just a wedding,” I said.

Her eyes flashed. “I love Grant.”

Grant laughed once. “You may. But you also scheduled our marriage like a financing event.”

“I was trying to keep everything from collapsing.”

“That sentence seems to excuse a lot for you,” I said.

Marcus returned. “Police are headed to Ashford.”

Dad said, “The original trust records are there.”

“Then I’m going.”

“No,” Marcus said immediately.

“I spent three years being told to wait while other people decided whether I existed. I’m done waiting.”

Grant removed his boutonniere and set it on the table.

“I’m coming too.”

Juliette stared at him. “Grant.”

He took off his wedding ring.

“We are not married yet. The license hasn’t been signed.”

Her face crumpled.

Then Marcus’s phone buzzed.

He read the update and swore.

“What?” I demanded.

May you like

He looked at me.

“Smoke alarm at the Mercer archive.”
