Chapter 1 - THAT MAN PUSHED IT

The first crystal glass hit the marble.

Then the entire tower leaned toward my five-year-old son.

"NOAH!"

I was still twenty feet away when Elena moved.

She dropped the tray in her hands, sprinted across the ballroom, and threw herself over Noah just as hundreds of champagne glasses came down around them.

Crystal exploded across the floor.

Guests screamed.

Music stopped.

For one terrible second, I could not see my son beneath the white tablecloth and glittering wreckage.

Then Noah cried, "Daddy!"

I reached them and ripped the cloth back.

Elena was on her knees, both arms wrapped around him. Tiny cuts marked her forearms. Noah did not have a scratch.

Relief lasted less than a second.

I saw Elena holding him and reacted before I understood anything.

"GET OFF MY SON!"

She flinched.

Noah grabbed her sleeve.

"Dad! She saved me!"

I looked at Elena.

She said nothing.

"Elena, I—"

Noah suddenly pointed through the crowd.

"That man pushed it."

A security guard near the ballroom doors stopped backing away.

Tall. Shaved head. Black suit. Snake tattoo disappearing beneath his collar.

I knew every member of my personal security team.

I had never seen him before.

The man turned.

Elena reached into the broken glass and picked up something gold.

A cufflink.

She wiped it on her apron.

My family crest was engraved on the front.

On the back was a tiny profile of my own face.

Only twelve of those cufflinks had ever been made.

I gave them to the men closest to me.

"LOCK THE DOORS!" I shouted.

Steel security panels dropped over every exit.

The guard skidded to a stop.

I removed my tuxedo jacket and handed it to Elena.

Then I looked directly at him.

"You missed."

His eyes went past me.

Not toward Noah.

May you like

Toward the balcony above the ballroom.

Someone up there gave him a single nod.
