Chapter 14 - The Other Families
Brenda Keller’s death had been natural.
Heart failure.
But her house had been sold three weeks before she died.
To a company connected to Calvin Ross.
Her grandson, Jason, had never known.
When police told him, he stared at the deed.
“My grandmother thought she was signing papers to refinance.”
Dad closed his eyes.
Another victim.
Then another.
A retired mechanic.
A married couple who thought they were creating a medical trust.
Karen and Patricia had not robbed strangers at random.
People whose adult children could be painted as greedy.
Karen had used Dad’s family dynamics the same way.
Except she made one mistake.
The nanny cam.
Detective Harris asked me, “Why did you install it?”
“Lily said Karen was mean when I left.”
“You believed her?”
I hesitated.
“Not enough.”
Harris looked at me.
“You installed it.”
“Because I wanted proof.”
“Sometimes proof is how people give themselves permission to believe what they already know.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Karen was arrested on charges related to forgery, financial exploitation, and conspiracy.
The child-treatment footage became part of a separate investigation.
No screaming.
Dad watched the news clip once.
Then turned it off.
I asked, “You okay?”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I loved her.”
“I know.”
“That feels stupid.”
“It isn’t.”
He nodded.
Two days later, Karen’s attorney contacted Susan.
Karen wanted a plea agreement.
In exchange, she would identify every property scheme and return remaining funds.
Dad said, “Good.”
I asked, “You don’t want trial?”
Then Susan added, “There is a condition.”
Dad looked up.
“Karen wants Daniel to sign a statement saying the incident with Lily was misunderstood.”
I laughed.
“No.”
Susan nodded.
“I assumed.”
Dad stood.
“Tell them absolutely not.”
Susan raised an eyebrow.
Dad corrected himself.
“Tell them no. Professionally.”
Then my phone rang.
The preschool.

Lily had told her teacher something new.
Something about a night Karen made her sleep in the laundry room.
