Chapter 19 - The New Dress

The following spring, Mia graduated.

She bought her own dress.

$89 from a department store.

Blue.

Simple.

She sent me a picture from the fitting room.

Too much?

I wrote back:

Looks good.

Then another message came.

I won't cut this one.

Dark humor.

I laughed anyway.

Dad asked if I would come to the ceremony.

I said yes.

Lauren attended too.

She sat on the opposite side of the auditorium under the terms of a relationship that was now cautious and separate.

The divorce was final.

The financial settlement restored most of what could be traced to me. The rest Dad covered himself.

Lauren had lost her job after her employer learned she used workplace relationships to interfere with the scholarship process.

I did not celebrate that.

Consequences are not supposed to be entertainment.

Mia crossed the stage.

Dad stood.

He clapped just as loudly as he had for me.

I watched Mia see him.

For a second, she looked six years old.

Afterward she found me outside.

"I got you something."

She handed me a garment bag.

Inside was a white dress.

Not identical to the one she destroyed.

Close enough to make my chest tighten.

"I found the designer online," she said. "I saved for six months."

I touched the fabric.

"Mia..."

"You don't have to wear it. I know it doesn't fix anything."

Good.

Because it didn't.

But repair is not the same as erasing.

Sometimes repair is simply naming the damage and offering something with no demand attached.

I hugged her.

Briefly.

She cried.

So did I.

Dad pretended to look at his phone.

Then Grandma Ruth cleared her throat loudly.

"If everyone is done becoming emotionally healthy, I made dinner reservations."

We laughed.

As we walked to the cars, Dad fell into step beside me.

"You okay?"

"Yeah."

He nodded.

Then said, "I read your mom's letter again this morning."

"Which part?"

He looked at Mia ahead of us.

May you like

"The part about guilt not becoming permission."

He finally understood it applied to both daughters.
