Chapter 17 - THE LAST EXCUSE

A bailiff caught Lauren before she reached the witness stand.

She screamed anyway.

"LIAR!"

Two officers pulled her back.

"You told me you'd always protect me!"

Mom stayed frozen in the witness chair.

The judge ordered Lauren removed from the courtroom for ten minutes.

When the door shut behind her, nobody moved.

That moment ended the hearing more effectively than any lawyer could have.

The judge granted the protective order immediately.

Lauren was barred from contacting me, James or Emma, directly or indirectly.

Her child abuse case did not end that day, but the evidence was overwhelming.

Three weeks later, Lauren accepted a plea agreement: misdemeanor child abuse, probation, mandatory anger-management treatment, substance-abuse evaluation, no unsupervised contact with minors and strict compliance with the protective order.

She lost her job at a private preschool after the conviction became public record.

Dad blamed me.

"Happy now?" he said in his only voicemail.

I deleted it.

James' promotion went through in February.

Uncle Bob apologized to Megan and, more importantly, testified in writing about what he had seen years earlier.

Mom continued with the divorce.

We started counseling, not because our marriage was broken, but because trauma does not need permission to move into your house.

By spring, Emma was crawling.

By summer, she was pulling herself up on the couch and laughing at the dog next door.

We had gone six peaceful months without contact from Lauren.

Then, one August afternoon, I carried Emma into her pediatrician's office for a routine checkup.

I stepped out of the elevator.

Lauren was sitting in the waiting room.

And when she saw Emma, she smiled.
