Chapter 16 - The Final Night

The video was not a confession.

It was worse in a different way.

Thomas Carter sat propped in bed, thin and exhausted. The timestamp showed two nights before his death.

Linda’s voice came from behind the camera.

“Tell Ryan you changed your mind.”

Thomas shook his head.

“The trust stays.”

“You’re leaving me with nothing.”

“I’m leaving you more than most people see in a lifetime.”

“You’re giving it to a baby who doesn’t exist yet.”

“I’m giving it to my family.”

Linda’s voice hardened.

“I am your family.”

Thomas looked directly toward the camera.

“Then act like it.”

The recording ended.

Ryan cried without making a sound.

I had seen him cry at his father’s funeral. This was different.

This was grief mixed with betrayal.

Police found no evidence in the video that Linda caused Thomas’s death. Hospice records later confirmed his medication levels were consistent with prescribed care.

But the video proved something important.

Linda’s rage about the trust had started long before Lily was born.

The cabin search uncovered more.

A calendar with Lily’s due date circled.

The trust deadline calculated beside it.

A list of “Emma incidents.”

And one final plan.

If the bathroom setup failed, Linda had a second story prepared.

She would claim I had become paranoid and was preventing Ryan from seeing his own child.

She had already contacted a family-law consultant using a false name.

“She planned for every outcome,” I said.

Harper shook her head.

“No. She planned for every outcome where everyone behaved the way she expected.”

“What did she miss?”

Harper looked toward the dark woods outside.

“That people stop being predictable once they know they’re being manipulated.”

Then a trooper rushed into the room.

“We found footprints.”

“Toward the highway?” Harper asked.

“No.”

He pointed downhill.

“They lead to a second vehicle.”

Ryan went pale.

“What vehicle?”

May you like

The trooper answered.

“A minivan registered to Emma’s sister.”
