Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Saw Me Sign

By nine that morning, Charles had investigators checking Evelyn Shore’s license and business records.
I wanted to drive straight to her office.
Charles stopped me.
“You need evidence, not a confrontation.”
“I have a forged document with my name on it.”
“And if Victoria planned this, she planned your anger too.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Victoria knew exactly how I reacted when someone threatened Lily. If she could make me look unstable, vindictive, or controlling during a divorce, she could turn the fight into something larger.
So I stayed home.
At noon, Anna found Lily sitting under the grand piano with a stuffed rabbit.
“She won’t go upstairs,” Anna whispered.
I crawled under beside her.
“Hey, bug.”
Lily stared at the floor. “Is Victoria coming back?”
“No.”
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
She took a breath. “She said you always change your mind when grown-ups cry.”
I felt that one.
Victoria had cried often during arguments. Not dramatically. Quietly. Carefully. Just enough to make me wonder if I had been too harsh.
“What else did she tell you?”
Lily’s eyes filled. “That Mommy wanted her to take care of the house.”
“Your mom never met Victoria.”
“I know.”
She reached into her pajama pocket and handed me a folded piece of paper.
“I took this from her purse because it had Mommy’s name.”
It was a photocopy of Claire’s death certificate.
On the back, someone had written a list:
Music box.
Blue safe.
Westbridge box 417.
Original letter.
I recognized Westbridge immediately. It was the private bank Claire had used before we married.
But I had never heard of box 417.
Charles read the note and went pale.
“Mark,” he said, “Claire kept a safe-deposit box there.”
“She closed it years ago.”
“No. She changed the beneficiary.”
“To who?”
May you like
Charles looked at Lily.
“To your daughter.”
