Chapter 17 - THE LAST SECRET

Charles Whitmore’s trial uncovered the final secret. Michael Whitmore had discovered financial theft inside the family company. Charles had been moving money through shell contractors. Michael planned to expose him.

The boat sabotage was supposed to frighten him. Instead, a fuel leak caused an explosion. Charles claimed he never intended murder. Gregory testified.

Mercer testified. Old bank records told the rest. Richard sat through every day. When the guilty verdict came, he closed his eyes.

The Whitmore name survived. But it changed. Richard ordered an independent ethics office created inside the company. Ethan removed three longtime executives who had protected Charles.

She refused. Again. Richard stared at her. “You are impossible.” “I like clean sheets.” “You can still appreciate clean sheets from an office.” “I don’t want an office.” Margaret, standing nearby, said, “Take the job.” Naomi turned.

“You’re supposed to support me.” “I support good decisions.” Naomi sighed. It was about training staff, protecting employees and creating systems so people with less power could report abuse safely. That mattered. She accepted.

On her first day, Ethan left a mug on her desk. A note beneath it read: BETTER DECISION? Naomi laughed. Then she found him waiting in the hallway.

“You said you’d ask later.” “I did.” “It’s later.” He looked nervous. This man negotiated billion-dollar deals without blinking. “Dinner?” Naomi tilted her head. “Work dinner?” “No.” “Charity dinner?” “No.” “Board dinner?” “No.” She let him suffer for another second.

“Okay.” His face changed. “Okay?” “One dinner.” Ethan smiled. Then Margaret walked past. “Remember, Whitmore, she can drop you in four seconds.” Ethan looked at Naomi.

“Four?” Naomi picked up her tea. “On a slow day.”
