Chapter 9 - Elena

Maria's knees nearly gave out.
Alexander took the phone from her and hit speaker.
"Who is this?"
The caller laughed. "You still think this is about Vanessa?"
Then the line went dead.
Owen traced nothing.
Detective Brooks mobilized units to Elena's last known address, but the apartment was empty.
No struggle.
No blood.
Just a cup of coffee still warm on the counter.
Maria blamed herself immediately.
"I should have brought her here."
Alexander stopped her. "You brought yourself here and protected my son. We're not doing guilt tonight."
It was the first kind thing he had said to her that did not sound like an order.
By midnight, the audio lab called.
The voice on Julia's crash recording was not Vanessa.
Alexander sat very still.
"Are you sure?"
"Ninety-eight percent mismatch," the analyst said. "Different cadence, different vowel formation."
Maria felt both relief and dread.
If Vanessa hadn't made the call, someone else had.
Someone close enough to know about the papers Julia refused to sign.
Owen opened the black ledger again.
"M. Sterling could be Vanessa's father."
"Martin Sterling," Alexander said.
Vanessa's father had died eighteen months after Julia.
Or supposedly died.
Brooks looked up from her notes. "Supposedly?"
Alexander explained.
Martin's private plane had vanished over Lake Superior. Wreckage was found. His body wasn't.
Maria remembered Elena's warning.
Trust no death without a body.
Then a security alert sounded from the east gate.
A gray sedan had arrived.
Owen pulled up the camera.
Maria gasped.
Elena stepped out.
Alive.
Alone.
She walked to the front door carrying a black folder.
Maria ran.
She reached her sister first and threw both arms around her.
Elena hugged her once, hard.
Then she pulled back.
"We don't have much time."
Alexander came into the foyer.
Elena looked at him.
"Your wife didn't die because of the trust."
He froze.
"Then why?"
May you like
Elena handed him the folder.
"Because Julia discovered who Ethan's real guardian would become if you died too."
