Chapter 15 - The Trust

Rebecca spent three days in a secure hospital wing.

Years of forced sedation and isolation had weakened her body, but her memory was painfully clear.

She told Nicholas their father had created a private trust before his death.

Not for money, but for control.

The trust owned voting rights in several legitimate Valenti companies and could remove Nicholas under specific conditions: permanent incapacity, criminal indictment, or marriage to a beneficiary approved by the trustees.

Hannah understood. "Claire." Rebecca nodded.

"Her family was added as contingent beneficiaries two years ago."

Nicholas looked toward Walter.

"By whom?"

Walter's face went hard.

"Carlo couldn't have amended it alone."

The trustees were Carlo, retired judge Leonard Price, and Walter Bell. Nicholas stared at Walter. "You never told me." Walter answered, "I spent fifteen years blocking every attempt to use it against you."

"You expect me to believe that?"

Walter reached into his coat and placed a folder on the bed.

Inside were copies of twenty-three rejected amendments.

Each carried Walter's handwritten refusal.

The newest request was dated six weeks earlier.

It proposed Claire Whitmore as successor beneficiary after marriage.

Walter had rejected it.

Leonard Price had approved.

Carlo's signature had been added through a proxy.

Nicholas stared at the page.

"So the wedding mattered."

"Everything depended on it," Rebecca said. "If you married Claire while legally impaired, they could argue the marriage activated the trust and your incapacity transferred control."

The staged photographs, medication, and pressure to sign had all served the same plan.

Nicholas looked at Claire through the glass wall of the adjoining interview room, where detectives were questioning her.

"Did she know?"

Rebecca's answer came slowly.

"Not at first."

"And later?"

Rebecca looked away.

"Later, she helped them."

Nicholas closed his eyes.

The difference between coerced and willing had just become the most painful question in the house.
