Chapter 6 - The Academy Knows More Than It Says

Ava stopped sleeping.
Her body improved.
Her face did not.
Dark circles.
A stomach that swelled whenever people praised her.
She began wearing oversized warmups.
Madame Voss noticed.
“You look ill.”
“I’m fine.”
“Everyone says that until they fall.”
Ava almost laughed.
“You wouldn’t believe me.”
Madame Voss closed the studio door.
“Try.”
Ava stared at her.
Something in the director’s tone had changed.
Ava said:
“Studio C.”
Madame Voss went still.
“The old mirror.”
Ava’s heartbeat quickened.
“You know.”
Madame Voss walked to the window.
“My predecessor warned me never to let students rehearse there after midnight.”
“Why?”
“She called it superstition.”
“Did you believe her?”
“No.”
Ava lifted her shirt just enough to show the unnatural curve.
Madame Voss turned white.
“Oh God.”
“You know what this is.”
The director whispered:
“I know what they called it.”
“They?”
“Girls before you.”
Madame Voss unlocked a cabinet and removed an old ledger.
Inside were names dating back almost eighty years.
Sudden breakthroughs.
Injuries around them.
Disappearances.
Mental breakdowns.
One notation repeated:
THE SECOND SWAN.
“What does that mean?”
Madame Voss pointed to a photograph from 1963.
One staring blankly.
“The legend says the mirror cannot create talent. It transfers devotion, instinct, memory, even physical advantages from someone emotionally bound to the person who asks.”
“Nora.”
“Yes.”
“And the thing inside me?”
Madame Voss’s voice dropped.
“The debt takes shape.”
“Human shape?”
“Eventually.”
“What happens when it’s born?”
Madame Voss did not answer.
Ava grabbed her arm.
“What happens?”
The director looked at the old photograph.
“The dancer in 1963 vanished after opening night.”
“And the other girl?”
“She woke up the next morning able to dance again.”
Ava released her.
Madame Voss turned the page.
A newspaper clipping.
A body had never been found.
Only a black feather.
Then Ava noticed something in the margin.
A name written repeatedly by hand.
CELESTE VOSS.
Ava looked up slowly.
“You were here.”
May you like
Madame Voss closed the ledger.
“I was the girl who got her talent back.”
