Chapter 18 - What Her Mother Kept

Lauren’s mother, Denise, had kept boxes of old school photos for years.

Delaney had visited her house months earlier during a local charity event. Lauren had introduced him as a mentor.

He saw the grocery-store photo in an album.

Later, when Lauren complained that I was on the Bennett committee, Delaney remembered it.

Denise had emailed him a scan because he told her it was for a “fun reunion presentation.”

She had no idea how he would use it.

Lauren sounded sick while explaining.

“I brought him into my family. I trusted him.”

“And Ava trusted you,” I said quietly.

Silence.

“I know.”

That was the first time she didn’t defend herself.

Delaney was eventually charged in connection with unlawful computer access, theft, and the restaurant break-in. His case would take months. Maybe longer.

Pierce Wealth hired outside investigators and began reviewing old personnel cases.

Charles called me personally.

“We owe people answers,” he said.

“Yes.”

“And compensation where appropriate.”

“Yes.”

He didn’t ask for our account back.

That made me respect him more.

The viral story faded after a few days, replaced by something newer and louder.

But inside the restaurant, something had changed.

Jenna asked to join the leadership pilot.

Tasha agreed to mentor her.

Ava built the first financial-literacy workshop.

Nicole volunteered to speak about workplace retaliation and documentation.

One afternoon, I found the old grocery-store photo printed on my desk.

For one awful second, I thought another message had arrived.

Then I saw the note attached.

It was from Ethan.

LOOK AT HER. SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT SHE WAS BUILDING YET.

I sat down.

And cried.

Not because the picture hurt anymore.

Because it didn’t.

Then Tasha knocked on the door.

“Maya? There’s someone here to see you.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

May you like

“Lauren.”

“And she brought Jenna flowers.”
