Chapter 1 - The Kick

Vanessa Sterling kicked the maid in front of three hundred guests—and smiled for the cameras before her heel even reached its target.

She expected Naomi Bennett to fall.

Naomi caught her ankle in midair.

The ballroom went silent.

A champagne glass slipped from someone’s hand and hit the marble.

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

“Let go of me.”

Naomi did not squeeze harder. She did not twist. She simply held Vanessa’s ankle steady until the woman stopped trying to drive the heel into her hip.

“Please don’t make me take this any further.”

The sentence was quiet.

Vanessa yanked her leg back.

“You attacked me!”

Naomi released her at once.

“No, ma’am.”

At the far end of the ballroom, Adrian Cole pushed through a crowd of donors, executives, and family friends.

“What happened?”

Vanessa pointed at Naomi.

“She grabbed me.”

A young server near the dessert table shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.”

“Stay out of this, Caleb.”

The nineteen-year-old server went pale.

Naomi stepped half a pace between them.

“What happened?” he repeated.

“Mrs. Sterling tried to kick me.”

“I’m not Mrs. Sterling yet,” Vanessa snapped.

“Correct.”

A few guests looked down to hide reactions.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Why would she kick you?”

Vanessa laughed too fast.

“Because she ruined my dress.”

Naomi looked at the untouched silver gown.

“No, ma’am.”

“She spilled champagne on me in the service corridor.”

“I spilled it.”

“Excuse me?”

“I bumped the tray. Naomi covered for me.”

Now everyone was listening.

“She told you it was her because you said you’d get me fired.”

Adrian stared at his fiancée.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Then the polished smile returned.

“This is ridiculous. We’re in the middle of our engagement gala.”

She reached for Adrian.

That tiny movement traveled through the room like electricity.

Naomi looked toward the ceiling.

The ballroom cameras were dark.

They had been working twenty minutes earlier.

Adrian followed her eyes.

“What?”

“There’s no footage.”

Naomi finally looked at her.

“I know.”

Vanessa’s expression relaxed.

Naomi added:

May you like

“But there are six other cameras you don’t know about.”

And for the first time all night, Vanessa Sterling looked afraid.
