Chapter 15 - Take It Further

One year after the kick, Naomi returned to the Cole estate for another gala.

Not as a maid.

Her company name appeared on the security plan:

BENNETT PROTECTIVE CONSULTING.

She had finally opened the firm she had postponed for years.

Leah designed the logo badly.

Adrian remained single.

He had learned that being betrayed did not make him wise overnight.

Claire chaired the Foundation audit committee.

Elena ran household operations and terrified vendors who submitted vague invoices.

Caleb was halfway through college.

Marcus remained security director after accepting responsibility for the mistakes that made the breach possible.

Trust had not returned because everyone agreed to forget.

It returned where people changed behavior.

Vanessa served the sentence and restitution obligations imposed through her resolved cases.

She had no speech waiting.

During the gala, a young server dropped a tray.

Naomi watched Adrian instinctively bend down and help gather glasses.

Progress could be embarrassingly ordinary.

Later, Evelyn found Naomi near the old ballroom clock.

“You know, that night Vanessa kicked you, I thought you were going to break her leg.”

“I was working.”

“That is not a denial.”

“I caught an ankle.”

“And then said that line.”

“What line?”

Evelyn imitated her:

“Please don’t make me take this any further.”

“People keep quoting that.”

“It was dramatic.”

“I was trying to stop a scene.”

“You failed.”

Across the ballroom, Adrian was speaking to donors.

He noticed Naomi and walked over.

“Everything quiet?”

“For now.”

He looked toward the floor where Vanessa had kicked her.

“Funny.”

“What?”

“I thought that was the worst moment of my life.”

Naomi raised an eyebrow.

“Your fiancée trying to kick the housekeeper?”

“The second after.”

“When you realized people had been telling me the truth for months and I kept choosing the version that was comfortable.”

“That was worse.”

“You knew?”

“I’ve seen it before.”

Then Adrian asked:

“Do you ever regret taking this job?”

Naomi thought about Patricia’s threat.

Elena crying in the laundry room.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because the point of protection isn’t always stopping someone from getting hurt.”

“Sometimes it’s making sure the person causing the harm can’t hide behind everyone else’s silence.”

Guests moved toward the dance floor.

Naomi scanned exits out of habit.

“Still watching the doors?”

“Doors matter.”

Then a server passed carrying champagne.

For once, she was not working undercover.

She stood in plain sight.

A year earlier, Vanessa Sterling had kicked a maid because she believed nobody important would object.

She had been wrong about two things.

Naomi was never ordinary.

And importance had never belonged to the people wearing the expensive clothes.

Naomi lifted her glass.

Across the ballroom, Elena, Claire, Caleb, Marcus, and Evelyn lifted theirs.

No cameras mattered.

No reputation mattered.

May you like

Only the truth everyone could finally see.

And this time, nobody looked away.
