Chapter 7 - THE FALSE DIAGNOSIS

Raymond Vale was not a neurologist.

He was not even Ruby's doctor.

Yet eight years earlier, he had inserted a false hereditary condition into her newborn file.

Elaine explained why that mattered.

"If someone later wanted to challenge her competency, guardianship, or future control of assets, this creates history."

"At birth?"

"Yes."

My anger became quieter.

That was when people around me became nervous.

Marco searched every old Bellandi medical-insurance record.

Raymond's foundation had also insured several executive family members under supplemental policies.

Isabella had one.

So did Ruby.

I stopped.

"Ruby has what?"

Daniel found it.

A five-million-dollar accidental disability policy.

Beneficiary if Ruby became permanently disabled before age eighteen:

Bellandi Family Medical Trust.

Trustee:

Raymond Vale.

I felt physically sick.

Lucinda had been worsening Ruby's injury while her father controlled a policy that paid if the damage became permanent.

Police obtained a warrant for Raymond's offices.

They found shredded billing records.

Fake patient identities.

And a locked cabinet containing files on my family.

Mine.

Isabella's.

Ruby's.

Lucinda's name appeared on internal emails going back nine years.

She had not stumbled into her father's scheme.

She had grown up inside it.

Then investigators found something stranger.

One file was labeled SALVATORE - CARDIAC.

I had never had a heart condition.

Inside was a prepared medical summary describing episodes of dizziness, confusion, and temporary cognitive impairment.

None had happened.

At the bottom sat a future recommendation:

TEMPORARY MEDICAL INCAPACITY - 90 DAYS.

Marco looked at me.

"Boss, this isn't just about Ruby."

No.

May you like

It wasn't.

Lucinda had been building a case against both of us.
