Chapter 9 - The Second Signature

Vanessa denied knowing Crown Harbor Strategies.
The bank disagreed.
Signature card.
Copy of passport.
Video verification.
She had opened the account herself.
Money from Brighton Advisory moved there.
Then out.
Some to Daniel Reece.
Some to event vendors.
Some to a luxury apartment in Manhattan.
Some to a jewelry company.
Adrian recognized the amount.
$78,000.
Vanessa’s engagement earrings.
She had told him her parents bought them.
He sat back.
“That’s almost funny.”
No one laughed.
Then one transfer caught Naomi’s eye.
$36,000 to Ashford House.
Claire’s rehab center.
Adrian’s face changed.
“Why?”
Evelyn knew before anyone said it.
“Blackmail.”
Claire had relapsed once after discharge.
Only six people knew.
Vanessa had paid a private debt connected to the facility through a third party.
Then kept the receipt.
Claire arrived furious.
“You had no right to pull my records.”
Rachel corrected her.
“We did not. We traced a payment.”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“She helped me.”
Naomi asked:
“Did she ask for anything?”
Claire said nothing.
Then:
“She asked me to resign from the foundation audit committee.”
Adrian stared.
“You did.”
“I thought I was protecting the family.”
Vanessa had paid a debt.
Then used the secret.
Claire removed herself from the one committee that might have discovered the fake vendors.
Naomi said quietly:
“That wasn’t help.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I know that now.”
Then she reached into her bag.
Vanessa had sent her a voice memo two months ago.
Claire had kept it.
On the recording Vanessa said:
“Family problems disappear when everyone agrees which version is public.”
Adrian looked sick.
Then Claire added:
“She told me your dad understood that.”
Evelyn went still.
“My husband never said that.”
Claire shook her head.
“I know.”
She handed over one more message.
Vanessa:
THOMAS SIGNED OFF ON BRIGHTON.
If true, everything changed.
If false, Vanessa was trying to blame a dead man.

They needed the original approvals.
And those files had vanished with the hard drives.
