Chapter 17 - LISA'S TRUTH

We sat in Maya's conference room.
Lisa twisted a tissue until it tore apart in her hands.
"When I was sixteen, Mom broke my wrist."
Robert's face went blank.
"What?"
"She shoved me down the basement stairs. She told everyone I fell."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Lisa laughed bitterly. "Because she said you'd leave and it would be my fault."
She looked at me.
"That's what she does. She hurts you, then convinces you the real danger is what happens if you tell."
I remembered her laughter on Christmas.
"So why did you laugh when she hit me?"
Lisa's eyes filled.
"Because for one second, I was sixteen again, and I was happy it wasn't me."
It wasn't an excuse.
But it was the first honest thing she had said.
She gave Maya years of text messages. Margaret insulting Daniel, threatening Lisa, demanding money, calling Robert weak, calling me "the nurse who thinks she's family."
Then Lisa opened one final message.
It had been sent three months earlier.
Margaret: If Robert signs the new will, Daniel gets the house and you get cash. Keep Emily busy.
Lisa: What if Dad says no?
Margaret: Then Daniel will handle him.
Robert stood and walked to the window.
His shoulders shook.
I didn't touch him. Some grief needs room.
Lisa whispered, "I'm going to testify."
"Against your mother?" I asked.
"Against the lie I've lived inside my whole life."
A week later, prosecutors offered Margaret a plea deal on the assault charge while investigating the financial conspiracy separately.
She refused.
Daniel, sitting in county jail without bail after the arson evidence, made a different choice.
His lawyer contacted Maya.
He wanted to talk.
"About what?" I asked.
Maya looked at the message.
"He says he'll confess to the financial crimes if you give him the house back."
I almost laughed.

Then Maya read the last line.
"He also says he has something Robert doesn't know about the deed."
