Chapter 17 - THE JUDGE

Judge Harold Brenner had spent thirty-two years in family court.

He denied ever seeing Grace’s name.

Then Ellis showed him the signature.

“It could be forged.”

“It isn’t,” Hale said.

The judge looked at him sharply.

Hale had brought the original notary log.

A private case number.

Her hands were ice-cold.

Brenner finally asked for counsel.

The state judicial commission opened an investigation.

Within hours, old sealed files surfaced.

Conrad Mercer had donated heavily to Brenner’s foundation.

Edward Cole had paid the psychiatrist.

Brenner had pre-signed emergency custody orders in exchange for favors.

Grace had been one signature away from losing Lily before giving birth.

Nathan felt physically sick.

Grace said, “Your father really was going to take her.”

Nathan could not defend him.

“I know.”

“He wrote that he protected us.”

“He protected you from Conrad after he created the danger himself.”

“That matters.”

“No rewriting him into a hero.”

That mattered to her more.

The paternity challenge collapsed.

The psychiatric report was exposed as fraudulent.

Grace retained sole legal custody while Nathan petitioned for gradual parental rights.

He did not demand fifty-fifty.

“You’re her father.”

“I’m also a stranger.”

“I don’t get four years back by grabbing half her week.”

For the first time, she saw not Edward Cole’s son.

His financial records were worse than expected.

Witness intimidation.

Attempted murder conspiracy.

But there was one account nobody could explain.

Payments began five years earlier.

Always the same amount.

GRACE BENNETT.

“I never got this money.”

Hale traced the account.

It was opened using her identity.

Millions had passed through it.

“What was it used for?”

“Political donations. Private investigators. Payments to Judge Brenner.”

“They made me look like I funded them.”

“And if Conrad goes down, the paper trail points to you.”

“They’re still trying to bury her.”

“No.”

“The last transfer happened this morning.”

Conrad was in custody.

May you like

Victoria was in custody.

Someone else was still operating the account.
