Chapter 19 - What an Apology Costs

The first hotel promised to house the families for three nights. On the fourth morning, its manager asked for a new guarantee.

I stood beside June while Adrian signed one covering the next ninety days. His lawyers had written a dozen limits into it. June made them remove the clause that would have stopped tenants from speaking about their experience.

"We don't owe you silence for a bed," she said.

Adrian crossed out the clause himself.

Grant was charged in connection with the fraudulent property records and the dangerous shutdown. Vanessa faced allegations tied to the charity payments and the scheme against Iris. Pike faced charges arising from Iris's detention and the evidence he'd tried to remove. Their lawyers contested parts of the accusations. The investigators kept gathering records, because charges were not the same thing as proof at trial.

I was asked to give my statement three times. Iris gave hers four. We did it anyway. When a reporter asked whether I felt vindicated, I told him to interview the tenants.

The video didn't make me famous in any way I wanted. Strangers recognized me on buses. Some thanked me. Others told me I'd ruined a good man's engagement.

"He chose his own engagement," I told one of them.

My former security supervisor sent a message offering to discuss my old job. I deleted it. I hadn't refused to erase that teenager's video eight years ago so I could go back begging for his approval.

Instead, I asked Adrian for something harder than a payout: a worker-run safety office with its own reporting line, no veto from hotel management, and paid training for the staff who knew which doors never opened.

He read the proposal slowly.

"You want authority to report my company?"

"Yes. Even when it embarrasses you."

"And if I say no?"

"We'll take it to the tenants and the press."

He signed a funding commitment, subject to independent oversight.

That evening June called me from the temporary apartment where Ben was sleeping.

"Lena," she said, "the doctor says his lungs are healing."

May you like

Then her voice broke.

"But he asked if the locks will be on our new doors, too."
