Chapter 18 - Three Hundred People Saw

Owen's camera had kept rolling during the cocktail hour. Grant stood by the floral wall, speaking to the photographers. He pointed toward the place where I was changing a fallen linen cover.
"Wait for Vanessa," he told them. "Keep the housekeeper in frame. Whatever she does, get it."
Minutes later Vanessa raised her foot at my face.
The full recording showed me catching her ankle and lowering it without striking her. It also showed Pike waiting beside the service door before she screamed for security.
The stunt was no spontaneous quarrel. It had been built into the evening's schedule.
Owen gave police the original card, file information, and the copy held on his company's server. Then, with the consent of the people who appeared prominently, he released the uncut ballroom sequence publicly. Within hours, the story about an attacking housekeeper began to fall apart.
But I refused to call it a win while June and the other families were sleeping in borrowed hotel rooms.
At a meeting with tenant representatives, Adrian faced the people who'd been erased from his foundation's paperwork. Mrs. Navarro laid a stack of unanswered repair requests in front of him.
"You've been raising money with our photographs for two years," she said. "Did you ever learn our names?"
"No," he admitted.
"Then start there."
One by one, people spoke. About mold. About locked doors. About being called liars when they reported broken alarms. Nobody shouted until Adrian tried to say he hadn't known. Then June stood.
"My son needed a working exit," she said. "Not a millionaire who didn't know."
Adrian canceled the property sale, authorized an independent review, and pledged company funds for temporary housing while the investigation continued. His board threatened to remove him. He said they could vote.
That afternoon Detective Brooks called with news of the transfer.
"Most of the four point seven million is on hold," she said. "But part moved before the alert. Recovering it could take months."
Then the city issued its inspection order.
