Chapter 11 - Inside the Collar

The collar looked ordinary.

Worn leather.

Brass buckle.

No hidden pocket.

Then I noticed the stitching.

One section was newer.

We did not cut it ourselves.

Harris came to the shelter.

A technician opened the seam.

Inside was a microSD card.

Margaret laughed once through tears.

“Robert trusted that cat more than all of us.”

The card contained video.

Garage camera footage.

Robert had installed a tiny camera over the workbench.

Most clips were ordinary.

Robert fixing a lamp.

Charlie sleeping on a stool.

Margaret bringing coffee.

Then Laura.

Clip one:

Laura enters alone.

Opens Robert’s pill organizer.

Removes two tablets.

Margaret covered her face.

Clip two:

Laura photographs a bank statement.

Clip three:

She searches the red toolbox.

Clip four:

Robert confronts her.

“You’re done.”

Laura folds her arms.

“I know enough.”

Robert laughs bitterly.

“She’s my wife.”

“She’s my mother.”

“You are stealing from her.”

Laura’s voice drops.

“I am fixing what you broke.”

“What did I break?”

“You kept everything. The house. The savings. Control.”

“Your mother owns half.”

“She does whatever you say.”

Robert points toward the door.

“Get out.”

Laura leaves.

Then the final clip.

The day Robert died.

At 4:41 p.m., Laura entered the garage.

At 4:46, Robert came in.

They argued.

At 4:52, Robert drank from the cup.

Laura watched.

Did not move.

Robert stumbled.

Charlie ran into frame.

At 5:01, Robert collapsed.

Laura stood over him for twelve seconds before calling for Margaret.

Twelve seconds.

Margaret whispered:

“She waited.”

Harris said nothing.

The clip ended.

Robert recording himself the night before.

“If Laura does anything, Charlie knows where I keep the truth.”

Charlie was asleep beside him.

Robert scratched his head.

May you like

“Good boy.”

Margaret broke down.
