Chapter 1 - SHE COMES HERE WHEN YOU’RE GONE

“You hurt me every day!”
The words stopped Ethan Cole in the hallway.
He had been supposed to stay in New York until Friday.
A canceled merger meeting put him on a flight back to Malibu two days early.
He expected to surprise his ten-year-old daughter.
Instead, he heard her begging.
“You’re lying!” Vanessa snapped from the kitchen.
Then her voice softened instantly.
“Sophie, stop making up stories.”
Ethan stepped into the doorway.
“She isn’t making anything up.”
A crystal glass stopped halfway to her lips.
“Ethan?”
The second she saw him, she ran.
She grabbed the back of his jacket with both hands and pressed her face between his shoulder blades.
That frightened him more than the shouting.
“Dad,” she whispered.
He reached behind him and found her hand.
“What happened?”
“Nothing,” Vanessa answered.
“I asked Sophie.”
Then the familiar calm returned.
“She had another tantrum. You know how emotional she’s been.”
Sophie squeezed his hand.
“What happened to your arm?”
Sophie pulled her sleeve down.
He had seen the edge of a dark bruise.
“Show me.”
“Dad…”
“Sophie. Please.”
She slowly pushed up the sleeve of her pajamas.
Finger-shaped bruises circled her upper arm.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“She bruises easily.”
“Don’t.”
For weeks, Sophie had changed whenever Vanessa walked into a room.
Stopped eating dinner with them.
Started locking her bedroom door.
Then he had done what guilty fathers do when work is easier than fear.
Anything but the obvious.
Vanessa suddenly started crying.
“You know how difficult she’s been since her mother died.”
“My mommy didn’t die.”
Vanessa’s tears stopped.
“What did you say?”
Sophie pointed at Vanessa.
“She told me Mommy is alive.”
Ethan reached inside his coat and placed an old photograph on the marble island.
It showed Claire Cole, Ethan’s first wife, standing outside a small medical clinic in Santa Barbara.
The photo was three weeks old.
A handwritten address was on the back.
“I already knew about the bruises,” he said.
“I also know you visited Claire three weeks before everyone was told she died.”
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
“What’s impossible is what my private investigator found yesterday.”
Sophie tightened her grip around his hand.
Vanessa whispered, “Ethan, please.”
“He found my first wife alive.”
The crystal glass slipped from Vanessa’s fingers.
It shattered across the floor.
Then Sophie leaned against Ethan.
“She comes here when you’re gone.”
Every sound in the room disappeared.
“What?”
“Mommy.”
Sophie’s face had gone white.
“She comes here at night.”
“Sophie…”
Ethan turned toward her.
“Don’t say her name.”
“She says I can’t tell you.”
“Why?”
“She says if I do, Vanessa will hurt her again.”
Ethan looked at the woman he had planned to marry in six weeks.

Vanessa reached for the counter.
And from somewhere upstairs came the sound of a door closing.
