Chapter 2 - NOBODY LAUGHED NOW

The security officer at the cafeteria door touched his radio immediately.

“Control, preserve cameras twelve through eighteen. No deletion privileges. Principal’s order.”

Sloane’s face changed.

Not much.

Just enough.

“My dad is going to hear about this,” she said.

Dad picked up the blue folder from the floor.

“I’m sure he will.”

Peter Mercer wasn’t just Sloane’s father. He was a real-estate developer, chairman of the school foundation, and the man whose name was carved into the glass wall of our new science center.

That name made teachers nervous.

It didn’t make Dad nervous.

“Go to the nurse.”

“I’m okay.”

“That wasn’t a question.”

Chloe stepped forward.

“It was just a joke.”

Dad’s gaze moved to the empty cleaning bucket.

“Who gave you access to that?”

Nobody answered.

The bucket belonged to custodial staff. Students were not supposed to be anywhere near the locked service closet behind the cafeteria.

Piper folded her arms.

“You’re only mad because she’s your daughter.”

Dad didn’t flinch.

“No,” he said. “I’m angry because a student was publicly humiliated and possibly assaulted in my school. The fact that the student is my daughter creates a conflict, so I won’t be conducting the disciplinary review.”

He turned to the athletic director.

“Call Dr. Lang from the district office. I want outside oversight.”

The room shifted again.

Dad had just removed himself from the case before anyone could accuse him of protecting me.

Sloane’s smile returned, but it looked forced.

“Good,” she said. “Then maybe someone reasonable will understand Mia started this.”

I stared at her.

“I started what?”

She lifted one shoulder.

“You know.”

“No. Say it.”

For the first time, Sloane looked uncertain.

Before she could answer, Security Officer Ben Ortiz entered with a tablet.

“Dr. Harper?”

Dad faced him.

Ben’s expression was grim.

“We have a problem.”

“What problem?”

“The cafeteria footage from the last six weeks is missing from the local server.”

The room seemed to shrink around us.

Dad’s voice became quiet.

“Missing how?”

Ben looked directly at Sloane.

“Deleted.”

May you like

Then he added the part nobody expected.

“And whoever deleted it used an administrator account.”
