Chapter 10 - The Coup

The first scream came from the gallery.

Renard's men locked the doors and pushed the royal guards away from the dais. Several guards resisted. Several did not.

That told me everything.

Vautrin had not spent sixteen years protecting an old lie.

He had been building a new throne.

"Nobody needs to get hurt," he said.

Lucien gave a humorless laugh. "Men only say that after they've surrounded a room with weapons."

Vautrin ignored him.

He faced the king.

"Edouard, sit down."

The king did not.

"You murdered my wife."

"Your wife discovered numbers she did not understand."

Severin stepped forward. "She understood them perfectly."

Renard struck him across the shoulder with the flat of his blade, knocking him down.

Elise moved, but I held her back.

Not yet.

Vautrin looked at me.

"You could have lived comfortably if you'd simply forgotten what you saw."

"In the tower?"

"Alive."

"You mistake breathing for living."

His jaw tightened.

Then he addressed the room.

"For years, I have kept this kingdom functioning while Edouard grieved, hesitated, and spent money he did not have. The army is paid because of my loans. The grain stores are full because of my contracts. Remove me, and this palace will learn how quickly loyalty disappears when soldiers stop receiving wages."

Lucien looked toward the ministers.

Several avoided his eyes.

Vautrin smiled.

"You see?"

I saw something else.

On the Wheel, near Elise's left foot, was the iron release bar.

Aveline had once told me the old hall machinery connected to service gates beneath the floor.

I squeezed Elise's hand twice.

Our childhood signal.

Wait.

She looked at me.

Then at the Wheel.

And understood.

Vautrin raised his hand toward Renard.

"Take the prince first."

Elise moved before the guards did.
