Chapter 14 - SHE WASN'T COMING BACK

The kidnapping charge changed everything.

So did the tickets.

The prosecutor did not sound impressed.

Neither did the judge.

A temporary protective order barred Bonnie from contacting me, Donovan, or my mother.

Caden received supervised parenting time only.

He did not fight it.

For the first time in our marriage, he seemed to understand that consequences were not insults.

Three days later, the insurance broker was found in Nevada.

His statement made my blood run cold.

Bonnie had paid him $18,000 to process the policy using forged electronic consent. She told him I was too busy to complete paperwork and that Caden had “full spousal authority.”

The broker claimed he never spoke to Caden.

That did not make Caden innocent of everything.

But it separated one crime from another.

Then forensic accountants finished reviewing Desert Hearth.

The Scottsdale development was real.

So were the losses.

The family empire she pretended to protect was smoke.

She had used her son’s insecurity as financing.

Caden sat across from me in Priya’s office while we reviewed the findings.

“I thought she was helping me build something,” he said.

“She was building herself a parachute.”

He nodded, eyes red.

“I know.”

I slid divorce papers across the table.

His breath caught.

“Taylor.”

“No.”

“I know I don’t deserve another chance.”

“Then don’t ask for one.”

He looked at the papers for a long time.

Finally he signed the acknowledgment of service.

When he stood to leave, he paused at the door.

“There’s one thing you still don’t know about the mansion.”

I looked up.

“What could you possibly know about my house?”

May you like

He swallowed.

“Why Mom hated it so much.”
