Chapter 14 - Grant’s Last Bargain

The black sedan tore out of Pier 17 before the agents could close the gate.

Dana checked the plate.

Her face hardened.

“It’s registered to Grant’s attorney.”

Victor stared at her.

“Grant is in custody.”

“Not anymore.”

Federal transport had been ambushed thirty minutes earlier.

One guard was injured.

Grant Hale had escaped.

Victor wanted to scream.

Instead, he looked at Eli.

The boy’s face was scraped and bleeding.

“Why would Grant take Rosie?”

Eli answered before Dana could.

“To trade her.”

“For what?”

“The card.”

Victor understood.

Grant did not care about Rosie.

He cared about the evidence Elena hid on her bracelet.

They tracked the sedan north through toll cameras.

Grant called from a burner phone.

“Bring the original card to the old Hale estate in Gloucester.”

Victor’s childhood home.

The place where Grant had grown up beside him after Grant’s parents died.

Victor closed his eyes.

“You’re taking a baby to bargain with me.”

“You took my company.”

“It was never yours.”

“It should have been.”

Victor’s voice went cold.

“You poisoned me because you couldn’t wait to inherit.”

Grant laughed.

“No. I poisoned you because you were going to leave voting control to your foundation.”

Victor froze.

Only three people knew about that draft amendment.

His attorney.

Grant.

And Marcus.

Grant continued.

“You still don’t understand how many people wanted you out of the way.”

The line went dead.

Victor looked at Dana.

“Call Marcus.”

She did.

No answer.

Victor felt the room tilt.

Marcus had been his driver for sixteen years.

His security chief before that.

The man shot while trying to recover Elena’s notebook.

The man Victor trusted more than anyone alive.

Dana’s phone buzzed.

A security image appeared from the Gloucester estate.

Grant stood at the front steps holding Rosie.

Beside him stood Marcus Reed.
