Chapter 19 - The Last Witness

Grant Cole was found in a nursing facility two counties away under the name George Carter.

He was seventy-four and dying of cancer.

When Ethan entered the room, Grant smiled weakly.

"You look like your mother."

Ethan sat beside him.

"Why did you disappear?"

"Because Wade tried to kill me after Rachel died."

Grant had spent two decades moving, hiding, and sending fragments of evidence to investigators who never connected the whole network.

Three days earlier, Wade sent him money.

Not as a gift.

As a warning.

"He wanted me to know he could still find me."

Lily placed Rachel's cassette on the bedside table.

Grant closed his eyes.

"She was braver than all of us."

"Tell me who cut her brake line."

Grant opened his eyes again.

"A mechanic named Paul Danner. Wade paid him. Thomas arranged the car."

Vega already had Danner's name in the hard drive.

Still alive.

Still local.

By evening, he was arrested.

Thomas, Mercer, and Danner were all in custody.

Federal agents seized the property network and froze accounts tied to the current flood scheme.

Claire finally slept beside Mia at the hospital shelter.

Ethan sat with Lily outside under clearing skies.

"I should have told you about the house years ago."

"Yes."

"I was ashamed."

"I know."

He looked at her.

"Do you forgive me?"

Lily watched the river recede below the levee.

"I'm still angry. Forgiveness can wait until after honesty gets boring."

He almost smiled.

Then Daniel walked toward them holding one last envelope Grant had given him.

"This is for Lily."

Rachel's handwriting was on the front.

Lily opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Rachel, Daniel, Claire, and a newborn baby.

On the back, Rachel had written:

LILY DESERVES TO KNOW WHO SHE REALLY IS.
